Red Light Night at The Amsterdamian: Why Should Halloween Have All the Fun?
For over a year now, we've been hosting something at The Amsterdamian called Red Light Night. It's become one of our recurring themed nightlife events here in Nashville, with DJs, specialty cocktails, our Wheel of Dares, and, of course, plenty of red lighting.
But there's actually a bit more of a philosophy behind this event than you might expect.
I've always been interested in exploring the boundaries of what's possible within the environment of a cocktail bar. Not necessarily by doing anything outrageous, but by creating a setting where people feel comfortable exploring their curiosity and perhaps expressing a side of themselves they don't normally get much opportunity to show. And that's really where Red Light Night came from.
Why I Started Red Light Night
Think about Halloween for a moment. It's one of the few occasions during the year when we collectively seem to agree that it's perfectly acceptable to dress a little more daringly than usual. People wear outfits they wouldn't normally wear out on a Saturday night, embrace their sensuality, experiment with their appearance, and generally allow themselves to be a little more adventurous.
And nobody really questions it, because it's Halloween. I've always found that fascinating.
Why is it that we need a specific holiday to give ourselves permission to express that side of ourselves? Why should someone who loves dressing sexy or a little provocatively have to wait until October to have an occasion where that feels completely natural?
I think that's a bit of a shame.
There are so many different sides to our personalities, and yet the environments we find ourselves in often dictate which of those sides we feel comfortable expressing. So I started thinking about creating an event that would offer that same kind of freedom, but without needing Halloween as an excuse.
That's how Red Light Night was born.
The idea was fairly simple: create a night where people can dress a little sexier, be a little more daring, and enjoy an atmosphere that encourages that kind of expression without making anyone feel out of place.
What Exactly Is Red Light Night?
For those who haven't experienced it yet, Red Light Night is a recurring themed party at The Amsterdamian, a cocktail bar in Nashville, Tennessee.
We transform the bar into a red-lit nightlife experience with DJs, specialty cocktails, interactive entertainment, and an atmosphere that encourages guests to embrace their more adventurous side.
There's no requirement to dress a certain way or participate in anything. Some people show up in their most daring outfits, others simply come to enjoy the music, cocktails, and atmosphere. And that's exactly how I want it.
I don't think freedom of expression means very much if people feel obligated to express themselves in a particular way.
The whole point is having the choice.
Finding the Edges of Exploration
One of the things that interests me most about Red Light Night is finding that sweet spot between curiosity and comfort.
I think most of us have things we're curious about, whether that's wearing something a little more revealing, dancing more freely, meeting different kinds of people, or simply being in an environment that's a bit more provocative than what we're used to.
But being curious about something doesn't necessarily mean we want to throw ourselves into the deep end. Sometimes we just want to dip our toes in.
And I think there's something really valuable about creating environments where that's possible.
That's been one of my main goals with Red Light Night from the beginning. To explore how far we can take an experience while still keeping it approachable, comfortable, and enjoyable for people who might otherwise never attend an event like this.
I don't want people to feel that they need to become someone else to belong. I want them to feel that they have an opportunity to discover something about themselves, even if it's something small. Maybe you finally wear that outfit that's been sitting in your closet for months. Maybe you find yourself dancing in a way you normally wouldn't. Or maybe you just enjoy being around people who are expressing themselves a little more freely.
All of those things are perfectly valid ways to experience Red Light Night. And perhaps that's the most interesting part of it all.
It's not about pushing people beyond their boundaries. It's about giving them an environment where they can explore those boundaries for themselves.
The Wheel of Dares and a Little Bit of Mischief
Of course, I also think a good party should have a healthy dose of playfulness. That's where our Wheel of Dares comes in.
It's become one of the signature elements of Red Light Night, and the idea behind it is really just to introduce a little spontaneity into the evening. Guests can take part in playful challenges, have a laugh, and perhaps do something they wouldn't ordinarily find themselves doing on a night out.
I think we sometimes forget how much fun it can be to simply play as adults. We spend so much time being serious, following routines, and worrying about how we're perceived that it's refreshing to have an occasion where we can let go of some of that.
The Wheel of Dares is there to keep the party moving, encourage interaction, and create those unexpected moments that often end up being the most memorable.
And again, it's entirely optional. The fun comes from wanting to participate, not feeling like you have to.
The Music Makes All the Difference
Another thing we've learned over the past year is just how important the right music is to an event like this.
We've been incredibly lucky to find some amazing DJs who really understand the atmosphere we're trying to create.
There's a huge difference between someone simply playing music and someone who knows how to read a room, build energy, and take people on a bit of a journey throughout the evening.
When everything comes together, the red lighting, the outfits, the cocktails, the music, and the people, the entire bar takes on a different personality.
And I absolutely love seeing that happen.
The Amsterdamian is normally a fairly intimate cocktail bar, so watching it transform into this lively, mysterious, and slightly mischievous environment is something I still find exciting.
Our DJs have played a huge part in making that possible, and I'm genuinely grateful for the talent they've brought to these nights.
What I've Learned After More Than a Year of Red Light Night
We've now been doing Red Light Night for over a year, and I think one of the things I've enjoyed most is seeing how differently people approach the experience. Some guests arrive completely embracing the theme. They've clearly been looking forward to the occasion, have put together an incredible outfit, and are ready to enjoy themselves. Others come in a little more cautiously, perhaps not entirely sure what to expect.
And I think that's great.
I never wanted this to become an event that only appeals to one particular kind of person. In fact, I think the most interesting environments are the ones where different personalities can comfortably exist together. You can be the person who wants to dance all night, or the person who prefers sitting at the bar with a cocktail and watching everything unfold.
Neither is doing Red Light Night incorrectly.
What matters to me is that people feel welcome and that the atmosphere gives them the freedom to enjoy themselves in whatever way feels natural to them. And after more than a year, I still feel like we're only beginning to discover what this event can become.
Why This Matters to Me as the Owner of The Amsterdamian
I think Red Light Night also says something about what I've always wanted The Amsterdamian to be. To me, a cocktail bar should be more than a place where you go to purchase a drink. Of course, I care enormously about making good cocktails and providing great hospitality. That's the foundation of what we do.
But I've also always wanted The Amsterdamian to be a place where people feel comfortable expressing who they really are.
We live in a world with an enormous number of social expectations. Expectations about how we dress, how we behave, how we interact with one another, and what parts of ourselves are appropriate to show in different environments. Some of those expectations exist for perfectly good reasons. But I also think we accept plenty of them without ever really questioning why.
And I enjoy questioning those things.
Not necessarily because I want to get rid of every social convention, but because I think it's healthy to occasionally ask ourselves whether there's room for a little more freedom. For me, that's what Red Light Night represents.
It's a small experiment in creating an environment where people can explore their individuality without feeling judged for it. And I think there's something quite beautiful about that.
What to Expect at Red Light Night in Nashville
If you're thinking about joining us for the first time, here's what you can generally expect from a Red Light Night at The Amsterdamian: A chance to dress a little more daringly. Whether that's sexy, elegant, mysterious, provocative, or simply something you wouldn't normally wear out, the occasion is yours to interpret.
A red-lit, intimate party atmosphere. We transform The Amsterdamian into a different kind of nightlife environment, one that feels a little more mysterious and adventurous than an ordinary evening.
Amazing DJs and dancing. Music is a huge part of the experience, and we've been fortunate to work with DJs who know how to create exactly the right energy.
Specialty cocktails. It wouldn't be The Amsterdamian without good drinks, and our themed cocktails are part of the fun.
The Wheel of Dares. A little playful mischief and interactive entertainment for anyone who feels like participating.
The freedom to enjoy the evening your own way. There's no pressure to dress a certain way, dance, participate, or do anything outside your personal comfort zone.
A Different Kind of Night Out in Nashville
Nashville has no shortage of nightlife. We've got incredible live music, bars, clubs, cocktail lounges, and just about every kind of entertainment you can imagine. But I think there's always room for something a little different. That's really what I'm trying to do with Red Light Night. Not reinvent nightlife entirely, and certainly not tell people how they should have fun. Just create another option.
An occasion where people can dress up, explore their curiosity, enjoy great music and cocktails, and perhaps experience a slightly different side of themselves. After more than a year of hosting these events, I'm incredibly thankful for everyone who's helped make them happen. Our bartenders, our DJs, and especially all the guests who've embraced the idea and brought their own energy and personalities into the room.
It's been a really fun experiment, and one I have every intention of continuing to explore. Because ultimately, I think we could all use a few more opportunities in life to be a little playful, a little adventurous, and a little less concerned with what everyone else thinks.
And if Halloween has taught us anything, it's that plenty of us have that side waiting to come out. So why should we only give ourselves permission once a year?
Come as you are, or perhaps as someone you've always been a little curious to be.
See you under the red lights.
